Our volunteer Drivers have been busy this week taking the first steps in becoming qualified Shannon Launch Vehicle Operators. Three days of extensive training saw our team of six learn how to operate the vehicle and coordinate the launch and recovery from key shore-based roles. The is the moment when the Salcombe RNLI lifeboat (Shannon Class) launched on service following a mayday call on Saturday 7th August that was made by the crew of a sailing yacht that was breaking up on some rocks. The yacht crew were winched to safety thanks to the bravery and airmanship of the coastguard helicopter crew that also responded to the emergency. With howling winds and driving rain, the helicopter crew managed to extract the casualties whilst hovering only feet away from the rocks. |
