If I seal the slate again after engraving it the engraved parts go dark and don't stand out anymore. I've tried mineral oil and furniture wax and have the same problems. I also tried masking the slate whilst engraving and then filling in with paints.

Did a bit of testing when engraving these slate stone coasters. One I left natural and then engraved. The other I sprayed with a glossy lacquer then engraved. As many pointed out, the glossy lacquer made the coaster look plasticky. Then I went back and sprayed the “natural” coaster with a satin matte lacquer. I like it a lot 😎

Fantastic glossy finish, and did not stick at all to the coffee mug at the 30 second on the 3-minute mark. If your budget allows, then certainly this resin is a great way to finish your tiles if you want them to be used as coasters.

I am using Varathane, Triple Thick, one coat clear finish, in gloss and it is working very well. I apply the spray before i engrave the coasters and then again after I have finished the engrave. One light coat before and after.
