Miles south of West Milford, light winds blowing from the north Friday morning pushed some plumes of smoke down into parts of Essex, Union, Somerset, Middlesex and Monmouth counties, according to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Firefighters are getting closer to taming a wildfire burning across the New Jersey-New York border, increasing their encirclement of the hard-to-access blaze.
