CLEVELAND, Ohio — Northeast Ohio is in for a prolonged bout of lake effect snow and plummeting temperatures as we head into the New Year. A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Cuyahoga County through Thursday morning, while lake effect snow warnings are still active in Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties.

Ashtabula and Lake counties can expect up to 15 inches of snow, while Geauga can expect 8 to 12 inches. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph through Tuesday evening. The initial round of lake effect snow is expected to drop 2 inches. But much more is expected Tuesday evening into Thursday morning.

While areas of northern Wisconsin received over a foot of snowfall overnight Dec. 28-29, southern Wisconsin received around 1 inch. Still, high winds causing blowing and drifting snow caused the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory even for areas with low accumulation, like Milwaukee.

A couple Alberta Clipper systems will start sweeping across Michigan later tonight and into Wednesday, bringing two fresh rounds of snow statewide. Some areas in Northern Michigan, the Upper Peninsula and West Michigan’s Lake Michigan shoreline areas will see more snow than other parts of the state.
