Recently, kawaii nail art has been bubbling up on Instagram and TikTok, and while its fame stateside is relatively new, the manicure trend has been a longtime favorite in Japan.

They exist primarily on visual-based platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, where it’s easy to communicate the aesthetic that’s become synonymous with the term “femcel”.

The femcel researchers found that, like incels, femcels struggled with sexual frustration but that the gender dynamics of sex and power made them react differently.
