Oilers eye revenge in rematch of OT loss to Canucks
After finishing with an NHL-worst 58 points last season, the Vancouver Canucks pulled off the biggest surprise on the league's opening night with a 6-5 overtime road victory against the perennial Western Conference powerhouse Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
In true Oilers fashion, the team managed to erase a 5-2 deficit with a dramatic late-game comeback to tie the game in the last minute, with Evan Bouchard leading the way with a hat trick and five points, only to lose that extra point in OT.
The Vancouver Canucks recovered after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 in overtime at Rogers Place on Tuesday. Cotter scored twice, Sasson had a goal and an assist,
Kevin Lankinen was one of the main reasons Vancouver was able to open the season with a victory. The 31-year-old stopped 31 of 36 shots, including 12 of 13 in the first period. While he did allow three in the third, Lankinen was still strong, stopping 11 of 14 shots he faced, which included some highlight-reel saves to keep the game close.
McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, paired up on the first line, spent much of the game toying with the Jets, lobbing the puck around along with Evan Bouchard in a game of keep away. That trio combined for eight points. The Jets’ roster and its 1,039 combined games of NHL experience weren’t an ideal measuring stick.
