As musical theater fans await Part 2 of the blockbuster Broadway adaptation, the woman behind Elphaba is releasing an album of softer, more intimate soul music.

Though Erivo says she’s felt embraced by Black women in Hollywood, “a lot of straight white men don’t know what to do with a Black girl who’s bald and has all these piercings.” She laughs.
