DETROIT - Bouncing back in a big way to cap off their weekend back-to-back set fresh out of the NHL’s holiday break, the Detroit Red Wings overcame two separate one-goal deficits to capture a 3-2 overtime victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday night.

Shayne Gostisbehere and Andrei Svechnikov each had a goal and two assists and the Carolina Hurricanes snapped a season-worst three-game skid with a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night in a matchup of divisional leaders.

The Detroit Red Wings (22-14-3, second in the Eastern Conference) host the Toronto Maple Leafs (17-15-5, 15th) at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. Detroit's last game was a 5-2 road loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 27.

The Detroit Red Wings have not been in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since the 2015-16 season. For a team that once went 25 consecutive seasons in the playoffs, that nine-year drought is a significant fall from grace.

The six-foot-five netminder’s performance was one of the surprises of the day and could prompt Slovakia’s coaching staff to ride the hot hand when the team returns to action Monday against the defending back-to-back gold medalist United States.

The Red Wings visit the Hurricanes Saturday night as Atlantic and Metro leaders clash at Lenovo Center in Raleigh.
