We went to this park in July and its a really nice park w great facilities. When. You drive in you park to the right to hike the peaks. There are other trails as well, but the overlooks offer the best views and the hike is strenuous. We did this and when we came back down we than drove to the left, a short distance, and parked and pic nic'd. Each site... There are many... Has a picnic table and a charcoal grill. There are bathroom facilities and trash dump in close proximity. So no you do not have to hike to the picnic area. We also have a tabletop grill that we used instead.
